Murray, whose wife Kim Sears is expecting their first child, won the coveted award for the first time in 2013 after becoming the first British male to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry. Despite no grand slam wins this year, he played a heroic role in winning the Davis Cup for Great Britain, defeating Belgium's David Goffin in straight sets in Ghent for the first British victory in the cup for 79 years.
