Club: Bolton Wanderers The first superstar of Japanese football, Hidetoshi Nakata was the country's darling when they qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 1998. He was soon also a national hero when he became the first Japanese player to make an impact in Europe during spells with Perugia, Roma and Parma in Italy. On loan from Fiorentina, Nakata spent one season at Bolton under the management of Sam Allardyce in 2005/06. It would be his last as a professional, choosing to retire at the age of just 29 after that summer's World Cup in Germany.
